DOS 741 - Week 4 Research Protocol Presentation
Project Description
Each student selected a clinical trial protocol that was interesting to them and then prepared a PowerPoint summary of the protocol. The presentation was recorded with Mediasite, a software package that allows simultaneous recording of screen contents and a video stream from a webcam. The combination of slides and video became a recording of the entire presentation experience.
Video Topic: RTOG 0933
For my presentation, I chose RTOG 0933, "A Phase II Trial of Hippocampal Avoidance During Whole Brain Radiotherapy for Brain Metastases". I found this topic interesting based on my experience at the Seattle proton center, where I was frequently the person assigned to contour intracranial structures for proton treatment. That was where I first learned to draw the hippocampus. We rarely actually used the hippocampus as an avoidance structure, though we did monitor and report dose that it received. The idea of sparing the hippocampus has been a hot topic lately, both because of the RTOG trial and because it was featured in the most recent ROR Plan Challenge, and the Interactive Contouring Workshop at the AAMD Annual Meeting.
Many people find speaking in front of an audience, even a theoretical audience on the other end of a webcam, to be one of the most terrifying experiences that they will ever face. Luckily, I have had plenty of experience speaking in front of audiences from my days at MIM Software, and even more recently as a presenter at the 2015 AAMD Annual Meeting. I actually enjoyed this part of the class, although I wish my schedule had permitted a bit more rehearsal time. As many times as I have spoken, I have rarely had a chance to actually go back after the fact and see or hear a recording of myself. I can see from the video that I still have a bit of work to do on "um"s and "uh"s. This was a valuable experience!
