"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
Involvement with communities of like-minded people with common goals and backgrounds can help in both professional and personal development. These are some of the organizations that have shaped who I am.
American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD)
ID 25045046
As the national organization for the dosimetry community, joining is an obvious first step towards connecting with other dosimetrists around the country. At my first AAMD Annual Meeting, I heard a call for volunteers for the various committees and I asked where I could help. I am now a member of three committees:

Theta Chi Fraternity, Beta Nu Chapter
My first year and a half of undergrad, I was leery of Greek life, because I had heard all of the stereotypes about drunken revelry and low achievement and generally not living up to any of the standards of modern society. Some of the stereotypes had been confirmed when I went to a recruitment party for what I later found out was one of the less savory groups on campus. By the second half of my sophomore year, I had been working for campus tech support as a part time student job and I had started to notice that people kept bringing up Theta Chi in conversation in positive terms. Several of my friends that I had met through work were members and they invited me to one of their parties. When I arrived I found out that just about the entire chapter was made up of computer and theater geeks who liked board games. I felt like I was home. Being a member helped me to come out of my shell, to see how organizations are run, and to learn to speak in front of others. It was one of the highlights of my undergraduate years.

Mensa is "the high IQ society", though I'm not overly fond of how elitist that sounds. I was hesitant to list it for that reason, but I guess this website is all about tooting my own horn, so there it is.
