DOS 751 - Research Methods III
Course Description
This class was dedicated to continued development of the research paper that we started writing last semester in Research Methods II. We submitted two drafts of our paper for feedback, and then turned in a final draft. There were no guided discussion forum topics or other assignments. We simply had to keep ourselves on track and coordinate our efforts as a research group to move the project along.
Assessment
Grading was relatively straightforward in this class. In my group of three, we shared a common grade on each of the two drafts that we submitted together, and we each provided peer feedback to grade each other. We also shared a common grade on our final submission.
Discussions
There were no formal discussions in this class.
Reflections
At the conclusion of each course, students are asked to reflect on what they have learned about the material and about themselves. The reflection is guided by five questions:
The new knowledge and skills I gained during this course were...
The process of conducting research with group members has helped me learn more about group dynamics on a collaborative academic projects. I have done many group projects in the past, but none were as self-directed as this one. One of the more interesting things I learned was how to include industry professionals on research projects.
The new knowledge and skills will benefit me by...
It is my hope that I will continue to perform research and write papers throughout my career. This foundation will give me a strong starting point on any new projects I start.
I struggle with...
When facing large projects, I still sometimes face decision paralysis where I am unable to start because there is so much to do. I learned that I can delegate parts of the project to others when this happens, but I also need to get better at asking for help.
I feel pretty good about...
I have received mostly positive feedback on my writing style. I like to think that I write clearly and express my ideas an appropriate amount of explanation and background.
Other reflective thoughts...
I think my group may have been better served choosing a smaller project. This was a major source of stress this final semester because we were delayed and delayed by factors outside of our control. A smaller project would not have relied on as many outside bottlenecks. All of that being said, I am very pleased with the way things have turned out.
