DOS 750 - Professional e-Portfolio
Course Description
The Professional e-Portfolio class serves as an introduction to the idea of online e-Portfolios and an opportunity to start building one. Students are guided through the process of creating a personal website using the Weebly platform. Since this is the first class in the program, the focus is on creating a framework that can be filled out over the course of the program, rather than trying to fill it with content immediately.
Assessment
Grading is based on successful creation of a Professional e-Portfolio website on Weebly, and on meaningful participation in weekly discussions. Design elements used in the e-Portfolio framework were up to each student, but navigability had to be maintained. A template for the content sections was provided, but students were free to add more content to suit their needs. The discussion forum peer-review process allowed students a chance to evaluate each other's e-Portfolios using the same criteria as the professor, and offer a chance to make changes before final grading.

Reflections
At the conclusion of each course, students are asked to reflect on what they have learned about the material and about themselves. The reflection is guided by five questions:
The new knowledge and skills I gained during this course were...
I learned how to make effective use of a new content management system (Weebly). I also learned to differentiate between evidence-based practice and "stuff". This class also introduced me to many of my peers on a more personal level. I still haven't met any of them face to face, but I am getting a sense for their personalities and interests by reading their discussion posts and their e-Portfolios.
The new knowledge and skills will benefit me by...
Communication through writing and through publishing that writing will help me to tell my story in more effective ways. As I learn about the things that are important to my peers, I am able to recognize some of the same ambition, worry, and excitement in myself. Getting to know my peers at this early stage in our careers will also help me build a professional network that I will be able to keep alive for years to come.
I struggle with...
I am still struggling with my old mindset that more is better when it comes to presenting experiences and qualifications. I have accumulated many pieces of paper and test scores, and I have spent quite a lot of time talking in front of groups. I need to be able to communicate why any of this is important, and if something ends up not being important, I don't need to try to wedge it in just because it is more "stuff".
I feel pretty good about...
I feel good about my writing style. I think I communicate clearly, and I avoid many common writing mistakes. I also have a deep knowledge of web technology, so I can see both the potential and the limitations of the Weebly platform. Even if I can't do exactly what I want, I can work within the constraints of the system I have to get something that makes me happy.
Other reflective thoughts...
Formal education is not just about accumulating a checklist of skills. Cooperative and collaborative classwork is also a chance to build networks with peers. In attempting to tell a story through a medium like an e-Portfolio, it becomes necessary to think about why certain parts of the story matter, and whether to highlight or skip over parts of it. The collaborative editing process helped me to connect with my partner on much more than a superficial level, and I am looking forward to bouncing ideas off of her in the future.
