"ABII was founded in 2007. It is the result of a collaborative effort between the Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Its purpose is to provide recognition to qualified Imaging Information Professionals (IIPs) in the successful implementation and management of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). ABII began administering the IIP exam in 2007."
- ABII History
Back when I worked for MIM Software, one of my product lines was MIMpacs, which can function either as an imaging-only PACS for diagnostic imaging departments, or as an RT-PACS for radiation oncology departments that need a way to store diagnostic images, planning images, plan files, dose files, and structure sets. I had been troubleshooting DICOM connectivity issues for years and I was well aware of the multitude of problems that can pop up with various vendors' quirky interpretations of the DICOM standard. I have also worked in the trenches of computer and network support for years in past jobs. Looking at the project management component of the certification curriculum, I realized that I had already studied all of it during my MBA program. All I really had to do was brush up on some new topics such as billing, scheduling, worklists, and the HL7 protocol. I did a self-study IIP Bootcamp program and then took the certification exam. A score of 75% was required to pass and my score was 94%.
What's next?
My next major certification will of course be the board exams to become a Certified Medical Dosimetrist. It is still not clear whether I will be eligible to sit for the February 2016 exams, but I will certainly be able to sit for the August 2016 exams. My goal is to pass on my first try.
